THE RECOGNITION

After having merited in the Kenya Open at the second place, spirits have continued to ride high as the Moi University Karate Club continue to prepare for the East Africa Open. Firstly, the team leader Margaret was happy to have officially handed the trophy to the University’s Vice Chancellor as a sign of welcome in a ceremony held to appreciate the efforts of various sporting clubs in the university, on the 29th of March at the varsity student center starting from 8pm to 11pm. Speaking at the event, the vice chancellor promised to continue giving support to every sporting activity within the university, giving them a challenge to try and emulate the ways and what has been done by the Karate Club amid the tough operating conditions such as the lack of surplus funds for effective training. MOI UNIVERSITY'S GLORY

With anxiety having kicked in and out of the participants that is before and after the Kenya Open. One thing still remains clear and outstanding! They all gave it their best shot. Whether half-backed or fully prepared the participants all gave gave their best owing to the fact that Moi university overall (with satellites) clinched position two out of a total of twenty universities (and colleges) that were in the competition. Speaking after the event, Margret (the cheerleader for team Moi) said that they had a total of 14 medals that made them four trophies less than the winners Kenyatta university. Among the trophies were five gold medals, six silver and three bronze, lacking one gold medal, a silver and and two bronze medals compared to the winners. The Moi team was awarded a 1st runners up prize of a hundred thousand Kenya shillings as motivation. THE PAIN THAT COMES WITH BEING A KARATEKA

Ever wondered what usually happens when a karateka is injured? The steps taken to ensure their safety? Different procedures that are followed incase of a major or minor injury? Injuries are known to be part of every sportsman’s life, but some usually mark the beginning of misery. Moi university karate club has put different measures in place to ensure the safety of sportsmen. The club not only has members who practice that art of punching and kicking, but also red cross members that deal with injured personnel. The team responsible for carrying out first aid have different trained skills that makes them qualify to do the job.  The most commonly known injuries would include minor injury to the neck like bruising and abrasion., broken limbs cuts and strains. However, there are some chocking techniques that can result to loss of consciousness. Major injuries are rare but when they occur they can lead to very serious health problems in the future. ANXIETY AS PREPARATIONS RICOCHET

Having been selected to represent their schools in the oncoming Regional Karate competitions, the various participants have had to do a lot more practice bearing the tough competitions. First, the Karate Club (Moi University’s), had to plan so they would have a series of friendlies their counterparts and the other participants in the Karate competitions. According to the club’s leaders Peter Zuma and Margaret Olonyo, the preparations for the friendlies have however been tough considering the fact that there needs to be some budgeting done by the hosts in an event they want tot host any of the teams willing to participate the friendlies with them. But even with the financial hardships, The Moi University team has had a friendly against the team from the University of Nairobi. This however did not go the team’s side as the final friendly results only saw the team win only two out of the total four bouts. THE COMPETITION

The long awaited inter universities competitions are here. Undergraduates students are given opportunity to represent their universities within Kenya. Well, sportsmen are seen perfecting their skills and techniques all with the aim of being crowned the best. Practicing based on gut feeling is no longer an option for the competition needs a little more than what an average karateka can offer. Moi University karate club Moi university has been left with the task of coming up with the best eight that the school has to offer, for only one team is required to represent Moi in the competitions. With that arising, Moi university karate club from main campus had to take three ladies and five gentlemen for the selection this Saturday to Moi west campus. We are all eager to see how things will unfold. The competitions are to be held in USIU.  The dates are yet to be confirmed. Let’s support our very own Karate Club.
